A kilmori wedding is a private affair.

Yes, you can read that literally if you want.

There wasn’t a big ceremony. No ceremony at all, in fact.

History woke me the next morning. I had no idea how long I’d slept, but I was still feeling pretty spent from the trial and the extended session in the armorer’s hall. The forbidden hall, it turned out, had a proper name after all.

“Edge. Edge, wake up.”

Oh yeah, that’s me, I thought drily and forced my eyes open.

“Yeah?”

The big man smiled. It was a wicked grin, like he was about to crack a joke or something.

“Tonight’s your big night, brother.”

“Brother?” I threw the covers off and stretched.

My lips were still dry. I snatched up my canteen and drained it in a few prodigious chugs.

“You’re a warrior now, but I doubt you’ll be thinking about that much tonight. I know you could sleep for a week right now, but you’ll have one very disappointed female if you do that.”

That got me awake faster than if he’d dumped a bucketful of ice water right on my head.

I wiped the water from my chin and said, “Holy shit, are you serious?”

History smiled so broadly his teeth showed.

“Of course! Edge, you did this to yourself. You pledged yourself to Evie. She was … making preparations while you finished the first stage of the path. Seems you’ve got a head start on the second stage waiting for you in the grotto.”

I hopped off the bunk and rummaged through my bag until I found my denim pants. I threw them on in a huff, excitement lighting me up on the inside.

“So I’m getting married today?”

“Tonight, brother. You slept the day away. It’s less formal than a marriage, but more binding.”

“More binding?” I asked with a raised eyebrow. “You know something about marriage, History?”

He shrugged. “I did have a life before I settled down here.”

I cupped an ear. “Was that ‘wife’ or ‘life’ I just heard?”

He playfully patted me on the back, but he was still smiling. I decided I’d never get used to seeing the stone-faced man express emotion like this. Was this how he felt about me when I got starry-eyed over Evie? No wonder he said it made him sick.

“Forget it, simpleton.”

“Hey, I’m a warrior, now. You don’t get to call me that anymore, jackass!” I snapped sarcastically as I pulled on a shirt.

History began rummaging through his bag, stirring up a racket.

“What the hell are you doing over there?” I asked.

“I thought I kept it … here.”

He produced a knapsack and walked it over to me.

“What’s this?” I asked.

“Consider it a wedding gift.”

He placed the bag in my hand. It was light, maybe a pound or two.

That threw me. A wedding gift, from him?

“Let me guess,” I said, hefting the bag. “The keys to your ship?”

He snorted. “Not on your life.”

I opened it and pulled out a brace with a small tube affixed to it. Clearly unobtainum.

“What, exactly ….”

The big man patted me on the back.

“This is an ancient kilmori weapon.
